  • Aww, man, thats too bad. I do highly recommend his autobiography Even This I Get to Experience. I thought it was very good.

  • I haved a mixed -- or rather, less than positive -- regard for his output. Yes, Norman Lear produced a number of groundbreaking shows and truly changed the medium of television. But I think a lot of those shows lowered rather than elevated the public discourse. Not because they dared to introduce "realistic" content, but because they did so with people always arguing and yelling at each other and freely tossing insults and ethnic slurs. 

    I'd say more, but I think I should say it elsewhere. I don't want to rain on the parade of those who think well of him. And I don't think badly of Norman Lear; just that he fits the saying "It is entirely possible to be the best in your field and still be overrated."
