One forum topic here that interested me was a post by The Baron on one thousand of his favorite characters.

Since I think the comics medium gets a bad rap about the empowerment of female characters in both comic books and strips, I wondered what names would come up if a given board was interested in nominating the thousand coolest "femmes formidables."

I'd devoted a blog to the subject of femmes formidables in all media.

But what I'm considering here is, which are the coolest ones of all in comic strips and books.

The only factor that separates a femme formidable from any old female character is that the former must have some above-average capacity for defense or offense.  Otherwise, hero, villain, or support character can be admitted, as can characters from any culture or nation-- as long as they BEGIN in comics, as opposed to appearing first in another medium.

Should anyone care to play the game, I'll assemble an alphabetical list of the first thousand named. If no one's into it, I'll probably finish it off myself.

I'll start with 26 in alphabetical order for examples:

Arisia Rrab-- GREEN LANTERN

Belldandy-- OH MY GODDESS

Catwoman-- BATMAN

Dragon Lady-- TERRY AND THE PIRATES

Enchantress-- THOR

Faora Hu-Ul-- SUPERMAN

Glitter-- D.P. 7

Hellcat-- AVENGERS

Invisible Scarlet O'Neil-- comic of the same name

Jann of the Jungle-- comic of the same name

Kodachi Kuno-- RANMA 1/2

Lois Lane-- SUPERMAN

Meggan-- EXCALIBUR

Nightshade-- comic of the same name

Owl Woman-- SUPER FRIENDS

Plastique-- CAPTAIN ATOM

Queen Azura-- FLASH GORDON

Rogue-- X-MEN

Sharon Cater-- CAPTAIN AMERICA

Tigra-- AVENGERS

Umar-- DOCTOR STRANGE

  • I don't know about a whole list, but I'd put She Who Must Be Obeyed on it. I'd also put Tinkerbelle on it.
