OK, I'll be handling this one a little differently than some of the other TV series I've re-watched. I don't own every episode of this, and what I do own isn't in broadcast order, so I'll be watching them as I find them, and updating this initial post as to where they sit in the show's history.

  • Show 1306: "Demon Squad", first broadcast 6/24/2022

The Film: Demon Squad is from 2019, making it the most recent film the show has done.  Imagine making a movie and having  it be on MST3K just three years later!  It's the story of a paranormal investigator who  gets caught  up in the search for a mystical plot device. A mediocre movie.

    Host Segments:

    • Larry Erhardt has returned with Joel Robinson and his SOL from the year 3000.  Joel catches up with Larry.
    • Joel's Bots were  on a space walk when he was captured, so Kinga sends him Emily's Bots, instead.
    • Invention Exchange: The Mads  presnet Electric Lassos. joel give Servo  a "Mood Globe", which makes his head change colors as his moods change.
    • They're uasng Joel's SOL set and door sequence,  presunably through electronic trickery.
    • Joel and the Bots present "Feers", a sitcom about a demon bar.
    • Joel reverts Servo's voice to its original setting, which is not a big seller for me, since I was never a big Josh Weinstein fan.
    • Pearl introduces herself  to Joel, but is dismayed to learn that Clayton never mentioned her or Kinga to Joel.
    • Joel and the Bots do  "Demon Prov", i.e. Demonic Improv.
    • Emily's Bots are returned to the Simulator.
    • The Mads do "MadProv".

Ratings:  Another OK episode.  It was interesting hearing Joel riff again.

    • I'm starting to come around to your way of thinking regarding the selection of new movies, especially for season 13. Demon Squad was not simply bad it was bland. The only one I've "liked" so far was the Santos one (and I will probably watch some of the non-MST3K ones on my own at some point). Gamera vs. Jiger is up next and you've said that's was your favorite of this season, so I'm looking forward to that one. I also agree it was nice to see Joel again, but didn't he escape in a crate of hamdingers? What's he doing in the year 3000? I sometimes feel they spend too much time developing the "backstory." I'm perfectly fine with just a couple of guys riffing on the movies, like RiffTrax.

    • I enjoy the host segments more than it seems you do, but the continuity is quite jumbled.  Without giving it away too much, the season finale jumbled it even further.  Still, to be fair, they've never pretended it to be otherwise. "Repeat to yourself, it's just a show...", etc.

    • Speaking of which, what's up with the "invention exchange"? What's the (in-show) purpose?

And what's "movie sign"? I mean, I can figure it out in context, but that's a term I have only ever heard on MST3K. And why does it cause them to panic and run to the theater?

    • Regarding the Invention Exchange:  I don't know that it was ever mentioned in the show, but I recall an interview with Joel Hodgson where he stated that it was a tradition  at the Gizmonic Institute  to show one another their latest invention.  It was dropped during the Mike years, because Mike wasn't a "Gizmocrat". In terms of the show,  it enables the Forresters to steal any  potentially  profitable ideas that the hosts might have.

As regards Movie Sign, it's been shown  once or twice over the years that the Mads will cut  off the hosts' air supply if they don't get into  the theater promptly.

    • Ah.

    • One more thing about Demon Squad: the so-called "action sequence" rely heavily on cross-cutting but the editor has no idea how to do it convincingly.

  • Show 1307: "Gamera vs. Jiger", first broadcast 7/22/2022

The Film: In this 1970 outing, Gamera battles a giant reptile at Expo '70.  It's Showa Era Gamera, my favorite kind!

    Host Segments:

    • Pearl is proud of Kinga.
    • Jonah is reading a "Choose your own adventure" book to Crow and Servo.
    • Invention Exchange:  Jonah and the Bots present the Telegraph, which tells whether or not someone is lying about having seen a given TV show. The Mads presen tthe Plasmanator, which turns anything into plasma.
    • Jonah  and the Bots present the Expo Expo.
    • Servo teaches Jonah and the other Bots how to create unplaceable accents.
    • Dr. St. Phibes gives the results of everyone's physicals.
    • Jonah and the Bots hold an "Irish Wake" for Jiger.
    • Kinga is going on a tip  with Pearl, leaving Max in charge.

Raings: Perhaps unsurprisngly, this is by far my favorite episode of Season Thirteen  so far.

    "CORNJOB!"

    • I have all of the Gamera movies on DVD (as you know), but I didn't recognize this one until the annoying little girl came on screen.

I also have a tin of all the MST3K Gamera movies (except, now, this one).

  • Show 1308: "The Batwoman", first broadcast 8/19/2022

The Film: In this 1967 epic, ultra-wealthy wrestler Gloria fights crime as the Batwoman, wearing a bikini, boots, gloves, and a cape and cowl that look like they came from a beginning cosplayer's attempt at an Adam West Batman costume.  She is no relation to the Batwoman who appeared back in Season Five.  She battles Doctor Williams, a mad scientist who want to create a race  of fish people.  (I wonder if he corresponds with Doctor Z?)  To be frank, the whole thing is an excuse to show the admittedly well-constructed actress who played Batwoman's assets nearly falling out of her costume. Amusing Note: The bad guy's yacht is called the Reptilicus!

    The Host Segmrents:

    • Kinga and Pearl go on vacation. Max can't handle being  in charge and leves everything to Synthia and Mega-Synthia.
    • Emily's DNA test reveals that she's 2% Bot.  Crow and Servo throw her a Bot Mitzvah.
    • Synthia argues with Mega-Synthia.
    • Invention Exchange: Emily and the Bots present the Vin Diagram. The Synthias present the Duck-Tape Dispenser.
    • Crow and Servo are mad scientists  who want to hybridize emily with an animal, but she points out the flaws in their suggestions.
    • Emily, Crw and Servo attend the Billionaire Vigilante Gala.
    • Emily and the Bots market Batwoman franchise kits.  Mega-Synthia buys one.
    • Cliffhanger:  Kinga and Pearl return to find the Kingadome in flames while Max breaks down!

Rating: Another good episode.  This is the kind of movie that the show's always done well.
