Thanks for posting that video. This is the first time I heard about the show! However, I have to say that this clip does not inspire me to seek out more.
Newhart's phone sketches were terrific; I picked up a used CD recording of him a while back, and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Whenever I think of him, I think of his long friendship with Don Rickles. They'd vacation together with their wives every year. It's funny to see two guys whose public personas couldn't be more different -- the nervous Newhart, the abrasive Rickles -- get along so well; it reminds me that when we see a performer in a public appearance, they're always performing. (And then again, I've got very different energy from some of my best friends, and that's probably how we get along so well. Sometimes you find your right opposite.)
The complete series DVD of Bob is available on eBay. YouTube has the complete series free for streaming. Season one had 25 episodes, ending with the bullpen all being fired by the new owner. Season two had Bob back at the greeting card company. It was cancelled after 6 episodes.
There was a time a buddy and I would watch the Bob Newhart Show on Nick at Night.
Last year I rewatched all of Newhart, which has one of the best series endings of all time.
2-3 years ago I watched a documentary about Don Rickles and learned that he and Bob Newhart were very close. Talking about opposites attract...at least in theur public personas.
