"I've mentioned The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. If one was selecting a single Heinlein to read, it would be a good choice. It has enough to sustain it, despite dated elements.
The Stars My Destination is definitely worth reading. It's a facinating…"

JD DeLuzio replied to Captain Comics's discussion The Nerd Canon
"Stranger in a Strange Land was a big deal when it came out, but it doesn't hold up at all for me.  Starship Troopers is hugely influential, whatever the politics are supposed to be (a thorny issue with the oft-controversial Heinlein). Some of his YA…"

JD DeLuzio replied to Cavaliere (moderator emeritus)'s discussion What are you watching right now?
    "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
Well, we liked it, but we are not yet sold on it.
The new Trek has divided audiences, even allowing for reviews and takedowns that were written before it aired.
    Some thoughts:
-the stated purpose was to make a Trek that…"

    "More recently.
Ah.... More recent and contemporary writers who have written things I liked or that others really liked include David Brin, Lauren Beukes, Liu Cixin, Neil Gaiman (yeah, I know. I know), Kameron Hurley (read The Light Brigade) N.K.…"

JD DeLuzio replied to Captain Comics's discussion The Nerd Canon
    "Okay my next-but-one post:
I was thinking of how John Wyndham's The Chrysalids came in and out of favour (as I experienced it. I recognize that the plural of anecdote is not data) over the course of my life. I read it in high school, and we saw it…"

JD DeLuzio replied to Captain Comics's discussion The Nerd Canon
"Okay, so somehow, I deleted my lengthy post from the other day, so I'll recreate some bits. John Scalzi has a column about the problematic nature of the SF canon, suggesting that (duh!) you read the people who interest you. Okay, he goes deeper than…"

JD DeLuzio replied to Captain Comics's discussion The Massive, Extravagant, Over-the-top Golden Age JSA Re-read
"[Nyarl Dotep] sounds like it might be an anagram to me, but I've never been very good at those.
Fox used “Nyarl” a lot. “The fish-men of Nyarl-Hotep," for example. So I didn’t look for any other meaning.
    And "Dotep" sounds like "Imhotep.""

JD DeLuzio replied to Captain Comics's discussion The Massive, Extravagant, Over-the-top Golden Age JSA Re-read
"I've never heard that expression, either. Here, in context, it sounds like he means "hot stuff" or something, but in the lead-in to the Dr. Fate chapter he says, "I'm some punkins (sic) as a Justice Society member," indicating the opposite.…"

Thanks for the info about Phantom of the Opera. I'll propose this to our music minister and see what he says!
